Fiestas del Pilar was the name on the label that (until the 1990s) identified one of the cans containing film secretly developed at the Fotofilm lab in Barcelona. In fact it was the “code-name” invented by the director, Manel Esteban Marquilles in the 1970s, to hide a collection of political films shot in Spain over two decades. The films penetrate the human territories of social contestation, sweeping away the official Fordist clichés for the working classes, setting up a new ethical and aesthetic canon that transformed the Spanish society of the time.

Fifty years after filming, some of the anonymous authors, who became exceptional figures at a key moment in contemporary Spanish history, explain how they managed to successfully make the movies clandestinely. And, more than half a century later, they express their thoughts about the present time, between the utopian forces of the 1960s and the post-liberal digital economy.
